Kinetic Mirror

A mirror with moving frames inspired by wooden kinetic sculptures

When briefed to create a mirror for the Italian design stuido Porada, my goal was to be influenced by their design language, but add my own creative flare to it.

On this project I played around with my passion for mechanics and intergrated that into a specific design practice and language. Adding a kinetic feature to a traditionally static mirror design, made for a very interesting interaction between mirror and user. It questions the use of the object to exclusivley reflect once self image.

The mirror features a kinetic aspect like a moving sculpture. It can be hung on the wall with the central bearing mount on the back, in the home or as an intriguing addition to a fine dining restaurant, hotel, event space etc.

The frames moves through a consecutive system of gears and pulleys that ends in a flywheel at the back of the mirror. When cranked, the gear ratio allows for the the frames to move slowly around the mirror and the flywheel fast, resulting in the frames spinning for longer. The two frames have two slightly different ratios, this effect is what defines the mirror and is quite mesmerising.

A brushless motor can be fitted for a continous display.
